The simplest and most accurate
alternative test is the Farnsworth
lantern (FALANT) test. This is the
preferable test to the other option, the
color signal light test, because FAA
authorization is not required to take the
test. If you pass the Farnsworth, an
unrestricted medical certificate is issued
by the AME. If you wish to obtain a Letter
of Evidence the FAA has a complex
process for this. See a summary of the
requirements here
. If you do not pass, you can
request authorization from the
FAA Aeromedical Certification
Division to take a color signal
light test and operatinal color
vision test (OCVT).
In the Farnsworth test, you are
presented with a combination
of 2 colors at a time. They will
be red, green, or white. They
may be presented in any
combination to include the
same color presented together,
i.e., 2 reds.
You may schedule a Farnsworth lantern (FALANT) test for
color vision by calling 602-368-5633.

In the Farnsworth test, you are presented with a combination of 2 colors at a time. They will be red, green, or white.
