Mission and Philosophy
We at Special Issuance services are dedicated to Pilots and Controllers
with medical Special Issuance needs. We want to see you successfully
obtain and keep your medical certificate while maintaining aviation safety.
We are a private consulting company and not a part of the FAA (Federal
Aviation Administration).
There are medical conditions which disqualify an individual from receiving
an FAA medical certificate. For many of these conditions, there is an
allowance in the regulations whereby the Federal Air Surgeon may grant a
Special Issuance medical certificate. In these cases, the applicant must
submit defined medical records and test results relating to the medical
condition. At the discretion of the Federal Air Surgeon, a medical certificate
may be issued with certain restrictions and requirements to report the
status of the medical condition at predetermined intervals.
The Special Issuance service at My Flight Surgeon assists you by defining
the documentation the FAA will request. We will assist you in
communicating with your doctors to insure they understand the specific
requirements of the FAA. We then aid you in obtaining any further testing or
examinations that is specified by the FAA.
Once all of the documentation is gathered, we review it for completeness
and submit it with a summary letter to the FAA for their review and decision.
We stay in touch with the FAA and keep you informed of the progress of the
application as it goes through the FAA's review process. We communicate
with you throughout the entire process to resolution.
Color Vision Testing
We offer the FARNSWORTH Lantern (FALANT) test for color vision when one
cannot pass the Ishihara pseudoisochromatic color plate test.

Why Do You Need the Special Issuance Service
Several years ago the Aeromedical Certification Division in Oklahoma City
received 450,000+ medical applications of which only 1.5% of total
applications were given General Denials (disqualified) . 89% of the denied
airmen failed to provide information requested by the FAA or did not pursue
the application further. These airmen receiving denials may have been
certified if they had submitted further documentation to the FAA. Unless you
have an advocate working for you, it is up to you to understand the ever
changing certification and Special Issuance process. The Federal Air
Surgeon issued only 0.2% Final Denials, or disqualifications after
submission of all required information.
Information on Special Issuances can be confusing since the rules
governing these protocols are often changing with new medical treatments
and technology. The task of researching these ever changing rules and
regulations can be daunting to one who does not deal with it on a daily
basis. The Special Issuance services of My Flight Surgeon will make the
process much easier for you. Our advantage; Aviation Medicine is all we do.
About 85% of Aviation Medical Examiners conduct only 15 medical exams a
year. If these doctors are in doubt, they often defer your medical to the FAA
and do not take the time or effort to act in your interests. Former Federal Air
Surgeon Jon L. Jordan, M.D., J.D. noted that when a pilot's medical is in
jeopardy, a good pilot advocate can cut down on communication barriers.
He continued, "effective advocates are time-savers for the agency and the
pilot, and have improved our relationship with the pilot community." Pilots
should choose someone who specializes in dealing with Special Issuance
and knows how to work with the FAA regarding medical certification.
A rejection letter from the FAA does not have to mean the end of your medical
certificate and possibly your aviation career. If you have been disqualified for
a medical certificate, you have two options: a) prove that you do not have the
medical condition with which you've been diagnosed; b) apply for Special
Issuance medical certificate.
The Special Issuance services of My Flight Surgeon will expedite FAA
approval. With your permission, our service retrieves, reviews, organizes and
submits pilot records to the FAA increasing your chances of a more timely,
successful approval of your medical certificate. Our advantage; Aviation
Medicine is all we do.
